Washington rules of the road

Study the current rule behind the driving decision.

The best practice answer is not a memorized slogan. It is the safe, current rule that applies to the situation in front of you.

A practical way to study

  1. Identify the traffic control, roadway condition, or other road user involved.
  2. Read the applicable Washington statute or rule and keep its conditions together.
  3. Practice explaining why the safe answer applies—not merely which option to select.

Use current primary sources

Washington's rules of the road are primarily in Title 46 RCW, especially Chapter 46.61. Driver-licensing rules are also published in Chapter 308-104 WAC. Check the current text when a rule, effective date, or exception matters.
