Washington permit-test study guide
Study the rule, the condition, and the reason.
This is an original Washington study plan built around current primary-law sources. It is not a copy of the Washington Driver Guide and is not affiliated with Washington DOL.
A focused way to prepare
- Start with traffic controls. Identify the sign or signal that applies before reasoning through the roadway situation. Keep the control and its conditions together. Study Washington signs and signals.
- Start with traffic controls and roadway rules. Work through signs, signals, turns, lane use, speed, and intersection situations. Practice identifying the condition that changes the answer before choosing an option. Study Washington rules of the road.
- Practice who yields—and why. Right-of-way questions depend on the signal or sign, arrival timing, turning movement, and immediate hazards. Keep those facts together when you reason through a scenario. Study right-of-way scenarios.
- Review safety-sensitive decisions. Give extra attention to impairment, personal electronic devices, visibility, work areas, and other situations where a missed qualifier can change the legal duty. Study impairment and distraction rules.
- Check licensing requirements from the current source. License and permit conditions can depend on the driver and the applicable date. Use the current primary law and official process for your situation. Review teen licensing sources.
Check the current source when a detail matters
Washington traffic rules are primarily published in Title 46 RCW, especially Chapter 46.61. Driver-licensing rules are published in Chapter 308-104 WAC. Rules can include exceptions and effective-date changes, so use the current official text rather than a memorized phrase when you need to settle a detail.
Test your reasoning
The no-account preview lets you practice recognizing the applicable rule and reading the explanation behind an answer. It is independent preparation, not real test content and not a guarantee of passage.
